Perthshire politicians urge fireworks consideration

Publised date : 03 Nov 2020

Perthshire North MSP, Mr John Swinney, and Perth and North Perthshire MP, Mr Pete Wishart, have today urged those hosting private firework shows to be mindful of the impact on animals and others in the community.

With the cancellation of public fireworks, it is likely that there will be an increased amount of personal firework displays on Bonfire Night. Indeed.in a recent survey by the Kennel Club, 20% of Scottish residents stated that they planned to either host or attend a private fireworks display.

Commenting, Mr Swinney said:

“Public firework displays on Bonfire Night are a much-cherished part of our calendar. However, due to the risk of Covid it is entirely appropriate, though unfortunate, that they have been postponed this year.

“As a result, we are likely to see an increased number of households across Perthshire buying and setting off their own fireworks.

“I would ask those who plan on holding private fireworks displays to reflect upon whether the enjoyment that fireworks bring is worth the significant trauma that they can cause to individuals and, particularly, animals.

If you do decide to proceed, please show consideration for neighbours – particularly those with pets. It may be prudent, for example, to give a pet-owning neighbour advanced notice of your plans, in order to allow them to take steps to minimise any trauma to their pet.”

Mr Wishart added:

“I would urge constituents to consider whether holding a private firework display is entirely necessary and to consider the impact on other residents, pets and the potential impact on our emergency services.

I understand the excitement that comes from seeing a fireworks display, but with all major displays cancelled this year, we have to consider if we will experience the same at home. If people do decide to hold a private display, I would ask them to consult the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service website for safety tips ahead of the event.”
