Swinney and Wishart welcome farm support

Publised date : 10 Apr 2020

Perthshire North MSP, Mr John Swinney, and Perth and North Perthshire MP, Mr Pete Wishart, have today welcomed a Scottish Government scheme to support beef farmers.

Around 7,000 specialist beef producers will benefit from payments worth around £40 million in the coming weeks, ensuring money is still going to farmers and crofters during these unprecedented and challenging times. A further 469 convergence payments worth £768,500 have also been processed this week, mainly for new entrants to farming.

Commenting, Mr Swinney said:

“I am delighted that Perthshire farmers will receive further Scottish Government support during this period of uncertainty.

“All of these payments will aid business cash flow, helping to support farmers and crofters to continue to produce the quality meat products that Scotland is globally renowned for – and which we now need on our supermarket shelves more than ever.

“This is further proof of our commitment to the agricultural sector, and I am hopeful that this support will provide increased financial security to farmers across Perthshire.”

Mr Wishart added:

“At this critical time, it is hugely welcome to see this package of funding for our vital farming communities. Given the combination of the pressures of COVID-19, our departure from the European Union and difficulties in securing seasonal labour, the agriculture sector needs support from Government, but also from consumers. Alongside this funding from the Scottish Government, our famers and growers need the support of consumers who can help by buying as local as possible.

“I have spoken to a number of farmers in my constituency to listen to their concerns and I will be continuing to offer assistance and advice if they need support. I am pleased to see this year’s crop of Perthshire produce already making its way into farm shops and supermarkets.”
