Swinney and Wishart welcome arrival of Niel Gow statue

Publised date : 11 Dec 2020

Perthshire North MSP, Mr John Swinney, and Perth and North Perthshire MP, Mr Pete Wishart, have today welcomed news that the long-awaited sculpture of Niel Gow will arrive in Dunkeld today.

The bronze statue, which will pay tribute to one of Perthshire’s best-loved musicians, is the culmination of a 17-year campaign by fans. It received planning permission from the council earlier this year.

Commenting, Mr Swinney said:

“Niel Gow is widely regarded as one of Perthshire’s finest cultural exports. To that end, it is only right that his talent and legacy are honoured.

“This is a proud day for Dunkeld, and I would like to thank the fans of Niel Gow who have worked tirelessly to ensure that we arrive at this moment.

“Whilst circumstances dictate that we cannot celebrate the statue’s arrival as we would like, I look forward to us gathering when it is safe to do so, in order that we may properly pay tribute to Niel’s work.”

Mr Wishart added:

“I am over the moon to hear that the bronze statue of Niel Gow is finally set to arrive in Dunkeld this week. Whilst it will not be possible to have a large-scale unveiling and celebration like we might have hoped, I cannot wait to get up to see the statue as soon as it is safe to do so.

“Niel Gow’s work is celebrated the world over and it is fitting that this tribute to him will forever stand in his beloved Perthshire home.”
