Swinney backs bid to save school

Publised date : 22 Oct 2018

Perthshire North MSP, Mr John Swinney, has today thrown his weight behind a local campaign to save Grandtully Primary School.

The school is currently under review in phase two of Perth and Kinross Council’s school estates review. Under existing options, the school will either be closed, have its catchment area increased or be left open with no further action taken.

Grandtully Primary is the latest school targeted by the Tory council, with Pitlochry High also faced with the threat of closure.

Commenting, Mr Swinney said:

“Any attempt to close Grandtully Primary School must be vigorously opposed, and I am delighted that the local community has been able to mobilise so quickly against this absurd threat.

“Grandtully Primary is a fine example of a rural school providing a high-quality education to local children – indeed, its 2017 inspection report rated the school as “very good” in all categories.

“Moreover, the number of pupils enrolled in the school has increased by almost 300% since 2012. It is inconceivable that the Tory council could axe this well-attended and well-run local school.

“I, along with the entire SNP council group, will stand alongside the local community in fighting against this ill-conceived review. I urge the Tories to realise their mistake and guarantee the safety of this vital local resource. “

A local meeting in support of the school is to be held on Wednesday October 24th at 7pm at Grandtully Hall. This will be followed by a subsequent meeting on 21st November.
