Swinney commends Asda’s Happy Little Helper initiative

Publised date : 17 Jun 2019

Perthshire North MSP, Mr John Swinney, has today (17th June) visited Asda’s Perth store to learn about steps being taken to support children with additional needs.

To help make visits to the store less stressful for children with learning and communication difficulties, Asda recently rolled out their Happy Little Helper boards with Makaton counters to all local stores throughout the UK.
This partnership with The Makaton Charity has allowed Asda to create a visual shopping list using well-known black and white symbols that are already familiar to children through their use in school and support groups. These visual shopping lists therefore keep the children interested and engaged, thus making the shopping trip less stressful for the child.

Commenting, Mr Swinney said:

“I was delighted to hear of the steps being taken by Asda to support children with additional needs.

“These visual shopping lists capture children’s interest, give them an active challenge and make the shopping trip more fun.

“I congratulate Asda on the proactive steps they have taken to improve the experience of both children and parents. It is my hope that other businesses will follow their lead in providing support that is tailored specifically for children with additional needs.”
