Swinney to meet local NFU Members

Perthshire North MSP, John Swinney, will meet with NFU members at a local farm in his constituency tomorrow (Friday, 8 July).

Visiting Leitfie Farm, Alyth, Mr Swinney will discuss various issues affecting local farmers including flooding, species management and the impact of the result of the EU referendum on Scottish farming. Meeting with the NFU’S Regional Chairman, Roddy Kennedy, Mr Swinney will also be joined by local farmers including Ben Barron, the owner of the farm.

Speaking ahead of the visit, Mr Swinney said:

“The farming industry is a crucial part of the Perthshire economy, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to discuss some pressing matters for the industry, with local farmers, this week.

“The NFU Scotland has a large number of members in this area. Their voices are crucial to knowing what is going on in the region, and it is important that I take this kind of opportunity to meet with them and discuss what is going on.

“There is, of course, a degree of uncertainty in the farming community as a result of the UK’s decision to withdraw its membership of the European Union. I am particularly keen to discuss what effect this might have on Perthshire farming. I look forward to my discussions with the NFU members, this week.”
