Press Release

Swinney up to speed on broadband issues

Publised date : 27 Mar 2018

Perthshire North MSP, Mr John Swinney, is continuing to press for the rollout of superfast broadband within his constituency.

The Scottish Government’s Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband (DSSB) scheme has led to 95% of Scottish communities, businesses and homes having access to fibre broadband. The project aims to achieve a 100% connection rate by 2021.

Commenting, Mr Swinney said:

“I have heard first-hand, over a number of years, from constituents regarding the difficulties they have faced in obtaining a stable internet connection.

“The Scottish Government’s investment programme has led to more people receiving faster broadband connections than ever before. Through a bold approach to broadband connectivity, 83.4% of properties in Perth and Kinross now have access to superfast broadband. Without our investment, that number would stand at less than 66%. There is still work to be done but the Scottish Government is committed to providing 100% coverage of superfast broadband to every home and business in Scotland by 2021.

“Access to fibre broadband isn’t just about home entertainment – it is now vital to running a business in the 21st century. So, while I am pleased with the overall success of the DSSB scheme and am fully confident that it will achieve its target of full connectivity by 2021, I would welcome any steps that Digital Scotland could take to expedite this process within my constituency.”
