Swinney urges engagement with bus pass consultation

Publised date : 25 Oct 2020

Perthshire North MSP, Mr John Swinney, has welcomed news that the Scottish Government has launched a consultation on new proposals to offer free bus travel to young people resident in Scotland aged under 19.

If taken forward, the Scottish Government’s proposals would extend free bus travel to approximately 770,000 young people. Currently, around one-third of people living in Scotland benefit from free bus travel.

Commenting, Mr Swinney said:

“These are exciting proposals that will make a tangible difference to the lives of young people.

“Free bus travel will ensure that young people are able to access education and employment opportunities, whilst also fostering a greater sense of independence. We also know that this proposal would be particularly beneficial for those from lower income backgrounds.

“I would encourage all my constituents to engage with this consultation and share their thoughts on this very important issue.”

The consultation closes on Monday 7th December. It can be accessed online via: https://consult.gov.scot/transport-scotland/consultation-free-bus-travel-for-people-under19
