Swinney visits The Workshop Aberfeldy

Publised date : 21 Nov 2018

Perthshire North MSP, Mr John Swinney, has praised the work of a social enterprise that seeks to widen employment opportunities for young people in a rural area.

The Workshop Aberfeldy, which particularly aims to support young people under the age of 25, provides its members with practical and technical manufacturing skills in woodworking, engineering and metal cutting.

The Workshop has had a particularly profound influence on young people facing barriers to employment - 75% of its members are under 25 and 50% have additional support needs or rehabilitation needs.

Commenting, Mr Swinney said:

“The Workshop Aberfeldy is a fantastic social enterprise, which seeks to invest in our young people and improve both their existing skillsets and life opportunities.

“I am particularly pleased that these opportunities are being afforded to young people who may otherwise face difficulties when it comes to finding sustainable employment. As a country, it is vitally important that we continue to nurture the talent of all young people, and facilities like The Workshop Aberfeldy will play a vital role in achieving this goal.

“I congratulate Paul on the fantastic initiative he has shown in setting up this social enterprise, and I wish him all the best going forward.”
