Swinney visits V&A Museum

Publised date : 20 Mar 2018

Perthshire North MSP, Mr John Swinney, has praised the team behind the V&A Museum during a visit to the new facility ahead of its opening in September.

Describing the museum as “simply stunning”, Mr Swinney has claimed that the opening of Scotland’s first ever design museum is further proof of Scotland’s continued ability to innovate whilst being true to its rich cultural roots.

Commenting, Mr Swinney said:

“I was delighted to visit the new V&A Museum today. It is simply stunning and a huge asset for Dundee and Tayside. The building is a tremendous work of architecture and will prove a huge boost to the local economy.

“Scotland has a storied history of design from Charles Rennie Macintosh to more contemporary names like Holly Fulton, and I am very pleased that this has been reflected in the V&A Museum’s decision to have a permanent gallery showcasing Scottish designs throughout the years.

“Moreover, the building of the only design museum in the world outside of London is a further example of Scotland's potential as a forward-looking, cutting-edge nation. I am confident that this brilliant new building will only seek to increase Scotland’s appeal across the wider world.”

The V&A Museum will open to the public on 15th September 2018. The building was designed by the renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who is also behind the design of Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic Stadium. In addition to providing career opportunities within the local community, the museum will prove the centrepiece of Dundee City Waterfront’s £1bn redevelopment – a long term plan to ignite culture, tourism and business within the area.
