Perthshire North MSP, Mr John Swinney, has today welcomed news that the Society of High Constables have voted overwhelmingly to allow women to become members.
The change was ratified at group’s annual meeting, with almost 90% voting in favour of the amendment to the existing membership rules.
Commenting, Mr Swinney said:
“I welcome the decision of the High Constables of Perth to change their rules to enable women to join.
“This is the correct decision and I am glad the Society has taken it. It provides the opportunity for the Society to continue to make a constructive contribution to civic and local life in Perth and Kinross and to sustain an important local tradition into the future.”
The Society of High Constables was founded in 1830 and has approximately 100 members. They traditionally dress in top hats, white gloves and black morning coats, and seek to uphold the history and traditions of the Fair City.
