Perthshire North MSP, Mr John Swinney, has today welcomed the launch of Scotland’s first devolved employment support service, Fair Start Scotland.

The programme, which will offer personalised support to all that participate, will provide pre-work support for 12-18 months and in-work support for a further 12 months. It will also provide help to those that require intensive or specialist support. The service is entirely voluntary, therefore ensuring that those choosing whether or not to participate will not be subject to sanctions or any limits to their benefits.

Fair Start Scotland will receive up to £96 million of Scottish Government funding, with contracts worth £7.3 million awarded in the Tayside region. 

Commenting, Mr Swinney said:

“The new Fair Start Scotland service is rooted in respect, dignity and fairness. I would encourage any eligible constituents in Perthshire North that are currently out of work to consider enrolling in this first-class scheme.

“The Scottish Government realises that the way to help people find work is not through punishment and intimidation, but rather by supporting individuals and nurturing their talents. 

“This is yet another example of the SNP’s desire to provide support to those most in need, and I look forward to seeing the benefits Perthshire North will reap from this exciting service.”

Fair Start Scotland launched on 3rd April 2018. To be eligible for the service, an individual must be: living in Scotland and eligible to work in the UK; over 18 and out of work; or 16-17 and either disabled or in receipt of Employment and Support Allowance or Universal Credit. Those interested should speak to their Jobcentre Plus work coach in the first instance.
